Why did you create the Superbrain Kids series?
I created the Superbrain Kids series to showcase different children with neurodivergent brains. There are many awesome kids in my life with differences such as dysgraphia, dyslexia, anxiety, and autism. I, myself, am a neurodivergent superbrain with ADHD, so Jenny and her Superbrain Focus is an autobiographical tale looking back on what it was like as a kid with undiagnosed ADHD.
Why is writing books like this important to you?
During the 18 years I spent in public education, I rarely saw books with neurodivergent students, and I never had any available to me as a classroom teacher. All kids must see themselves in the books they read, whether they are someone with the same skin color, religion, language, dialect, family structure, or physical or brain difference.
Researching the work of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop (Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors) is a big part of professional learning that I present to teachers across the country. My goal is to showcase students of all walks of life who are underrepresented in traditional publishing spaces.

What's the inspiration behind the story?
The inspiration for this story was based on my son, Jaxon. He was diagnosed with dysgraphia in second grade, just like the Jaxon in the story. I wished so very much there was a story like this for him when he was a little boy. There were so many big feelings behind learning to deal with a learning difference, and my hope is another student can find themself in this story and realize how awesome they really are!

What's the inspiration behind the story?
I have had several students with dyslexia over the years. Sam is a mix of several of them-- but is named for one in particular with a special place in my heart. She changed the way I supported students with dyslexia. This story is one that is real for so many students. I want them to know they aren't alone, and there are so many amazing things their brain can do!
Coming this Fall
Jenny and her superbrain focus
What's the inspiration behind the story?
This is probably my most personal tale. This story highlights a young girl with ADHD who doesn't know it. You experience her ups and downs, the masks she feels she has to wear to be "normal" and all the joy and the mess. As someone who didn't discover her neurodivergence until 38, I am hoping a young girl sees herself in this book. So many young girls are over looked in ADHD diagnosis because there isn't enough research of how it manifests. All the research has historically been studied in males. That's why we typically associate ADHD with hyper boys, when that is simply not true. It can look all kinds of ways and be seen in children and adults in all shapes, sizes, ages, and colors.
The Superbrain of Anxious Alex
What's the inspiration behind the story?
Alex is a little bit of all of us. He is anxious, he is smart, he has amazing friends, and yet... no one knows what it's like to be him. I am excited to bring Alex to life and be a beacon of hope for a lot of children (and grown ups too!) that deal with anxiety for all kinds of reasons.
Andrew's Awesome Superbrain
What's the inspiration behind the story?
This story is special to me for so many reasons. I am the proud aunt of two amazing boys with autism. This story is for them. Andrew is a little bit of them both. I have always wanted to find a book they can connect with, and again, the right one just hasn't been there. So, naturally, I wrote one! I hope this is a book many children with autism can lean on to see all the unique and wonderful things about them shine.
